Stained Glass effect

Materials: Acetate sheets
(preferably matt finish);
sharp craft knife (adult use only);
cutting boards; scissors; A3 paper,
markers and pencils; black insulating tape;
pva glue and spreaders; coloured tissue papers
translucent papers / coloured gel sheets;
invisible tape.

1) Stick several lengths of black insulating tape onto a cutting board (or thick sheet of acetate) and divide each length into 5mm wide strips. (An adult will need to do this task in advance for children)

2) Draw design onto a piece of paper (same size as acetate for artwork) and place beneath the acetate.

3) Peel back a strip of black tape and carefully stretch it into position along one of the design outlines.

4) When all outlines are completed, place coloured tissue into position and trace the required shape.

5) Cut the coloured shape and spread pva glue directly onto the acetate where that piece should fit.

6) Complete the design. Consider overlapping colours and building up tones by using extra colour layers.

7) Larger designs (to fit windows) can be created by groups working co-operatively on panels that are later joined with invisible tape.

Alternative to gluing: use an A3 laminator with matt A3 laminating pouches.
Artwork (1cm smaller than outside edges of laminating pouch) inserted and sealed.
Black lines can be created from black sugar paper cut to shape. Tissue paper is then glued on to black outlines with paper glue sticks. Seal artwork into laminated pouch (adult task).

Tip: matt pouches work best; they reduce glare and reflections.
